about
This song was inspired by feature article in Toronto Life magazine: "30 Days In Jamestown," December 1, 2006 | Shaughnessy Bishop-Stall
"WAKE UP!" BOOM — a battering ram. Boom--a flash grenade. It is the early morning of May 18, and all along Jamestown Crescent the doors are busting down. The Toronto Emergency Task Force squads, dozens of officers in helmets and flak jackets, storm through the rooms, shouting for people to get their hands in plain view. Children and grandparents stagger outside, stunned by the onslaught. Young men and women are dragged into the morning light. * At 4:30 a.m., 12 cube vans--each one carrying a fully equipped ETF team--along with 50 squad cars and a total of 600 police officers, had gathered in a large parking lot near Kipling Avenue. An hour and a half later, they were storming the units with the force and precision of a military operation.
Thirty days in Jamestown: the Rexdale housing project is reeling from years of gang violence and stigmatization. Even after last spring's police raids, it continues to be a place of deep divisions--between blacks and whites, Caribbeans and Somalis, Christians and Muslims, heroes and villains. Portrait of a community in peril."
lyrics
Is anybody out there?
Is anybody listening?
Are you looking back to see
Wond'rin' who or what it might be?
Thirty-seven days in Jamestown
Where are the Saints?
When are they comin' around?
Cries in the courtyards
Cries from the corridors
Where did the wild thistles grow?
Or was that such a long time ago?
Thirty-seven days in Jamestown
Where are the Saints?
When are they comin' around?
Early morning raids
Early morning wake-up calls
Ghetto of gangster glory
Is this another West Side story?
Temperature rising
Temperatures rise on backstreets
More wine more drugs more shots
I heard him shout it from the rooftop
Thirty-seven days in Jamestown
Where are the Saints?
When are they comin' around?
Thirty-seven days in Jamestown
Where are the Saints?
When are they comin’ around?
